Family portraits and candid photography by Angela Kipling

Documenting moments in a families life is a very special privilege to me. Birthdays, milestones and family time is important because children are only little once. Freezing moments in time is my goal with every shoot. Clients cherish the images and use them for gifts, greeting cards, social media posts and most importantly prints and gallery wraps for their home.

If you have never had a professional family shoot outdoors or have ever wondered what one is like, here is a brief look at what you can expect from one with me, Angela Kipling, Boondocks Portrait Studio.

First, for outdoor shoots you pick the location (places that are special for your family or spots I love because of there natural beauty.) The most popular spots right now are at local parks, spots along the St. Mary's River, the Tahquamenon falls, or at a families home. Yes, backyard shoots are a blast. Newborn shoots can also be done at home either outside or indoors (once I did one in a families kitchen/dinning room area because that's where the best light was but that's for another blog post.)

Second, we meet at said location and start with the standard posed family shots. Ya know, the more traditional, everyone in a group ones that help break the ice. Being the center of attention doesn't come naturally for everyone but by the end of the shoot even the most bashful of subjects are ready to be superstars. (See Miss Emma above.) She always starts off shy, no smiles and by the end she is doing poses like this. Adorable!

We move around the location for different backdrops and I use each transition to grab as many candid shots as possible. The best photos from the shoot don't always come from the posed, set up shots. The above shot with Emma flying was a unplanned daddy/daughter moment which turned out to be one of my many favorites from the session.

Action. Movement. Actually doing an activity can make for some of the best photographs. Bringing your own props or favorite family activity can really personalize a session. I always try to have some props with me that will appeal to kids and that are age appropriate. Above, Miss Emma was really enjoying a ribbon toy that I brought along for the end of the shoot. At this point everyone is relaxed and forget that I am there. This is what I am looking for, completely organic joy.

Parents, I don't forget about you. I hate to use the word "catch" but truly there is something magical about catching parents display how much they love their children and each other. A simple glance, hug, kiss, just make for happy photos.
